Engraved by Isaac Weld
Dated 1798
Copperplate engraving
12″ H; 9.25″ W
In 1855, Mary Jane Boggs wrote, “As to attempting a description of the Bridge, it would be preposterous an idea as that of making a picture of it.” Nonetheless, this early image succeeds rather well. It appeared in the travelogue of Dublin-born topographical artist Isaac Weld, published in three editions, 1798-1800. Weld’s engraving was soon reproduced in other publications.
Provenance: The Thomas A. Gray Collection
The Estate of Dr. & Mrs. R. Lewis Wright
WHY WE LOVE IT: Some travelers to Natural Bridge complained that the experience of viewing it was impossible to replicate. The early interpretation was a good attempt at showing the world the beauty of Natural Bridge.
