THE MAGAZINE ANTIQUES – The Winter Show—the elegant art and antiques fair held every January at the Park Avenue Armory in New York—is exhausting, enervating, and can seem endless over the course of its ten-day run. Despite all that, I look forward to it more and more each year.

We at the magazine pack a lot into those days, starting with the luncheon we host for the vetting committee—the experts who ensure that everything on offer is authentic and correctly identified. On the social side, we had afternoon tea at the Explorers Club— amidst doughty portraits, Inuit artifacts, and the skin of a man-eating tiger—with our editorial board of advisors, a group of curators, collectors, and academics who help keep us attuned to currents in the world of arts scholarship.

AUCTION DAILY – A week after our team got a sneak preview of New York’s Winter Show, we headed back to Park Avenue Armory one last time to see how the event is wrapping up. The Winter Show is an antique and art fair that has brought dealers and collectors together for 66 years. The public’s last day to visit the event is this Sunday, February 2nd.

One of the big takeaways from our return to The Winter Show is how much success the event’s vendors are experiencing. We had the pleasure of talking to Frank Levy of Bernard & S. Dean Levy on our first trip to this year’s Winter Show. At the time, one of his featured pieces at the event was a clawfoot sofa once owned by Henry Ford. That piece sold on The Winter Show’s opening night.

Fellow Americana dealer Taylor Thistlethwaite of Thistlethwaite Americana believes The Winter Show is the premier event to sell his high-end items. “I found out about getting into the show about six months ago,” Thistlethwaite told us at the event. “So the minute I found out, I was like: ‘pedal to the metal, we gotta find some treasure.’”

AD PRO – The New York design world is always busy. Keeping up to date on all the news can be tough, which is why we’re here to give you the New York news roundup, a one-stop shop for everything you need to know.

Events

The Winter Show Returns to the Upper East Side

Back for another year, the Winter Show debuted in the Park Avenue Armory on the Upper East Side last Friday, and remains open through February 2. The show brings together 72 of the top dealers and designers in the trade to support the East Side House Settlement, a community-based organization for New York. This Thursday, the design fair will also host the annual Young Collectors Night, featuring creative direction from Luke Edward Hall.

“Being a young dealer, I am very excited about my first young collectors night at the Winter Show. The show has so much to offer for young collectors,” exhibitor Taylor Thistlethwaite tells AD PRO. “Just by walking the floor, you have the opportunity to see the best of the best and actually interact with the pieces.”

THE NEW YORK TIMES – Art fairs are for looking, looking and more looking. They offer the concentrated absorption of the visual, cultural and historical, compressed into one location. A manageable size helps, along with a high degree of quality and kaleidoscopic diversity. The 66th Winter Show, located in the Park Avenue Armory, has size on its side — the large but not too large Wade Thompson Drill Hall — along with a goodly amount of quality from 72 exhibitors. And the fair signaled its intent to diversify by changing its name from the Winter Antiques Show last year.

ANTIQUES AND THE ARTS WEEKLY – The 65th Washington Winter Show was conducted January 10-12 at the Katzen Arts Center on the campus of American University. Balmy temperatures provided a marked contrast to the previous edition, which prevailed despite a government shutdown and frigid temperatures. Some dealers noted that sales seemed down, which many attributed to the unseasonably warm weather.
