A Turk Tobacco Figure Bust

American or English
Carved pine
Circa 1880s
13″ W; 25″ H; 8″ D

American or possibly English tobacco figure . This bust of a Turkish man would have been crafted for the advertisement of Turkish tobacco. This figure is very well carved complete with a turban and gilt drapery. This was found in a Nantucket estate and is fresh to the market.

WHY WE LOVE IT: Tobacco figures were a wonderful expression of advertising and signage.  I’m sure the tobacco shop that originally owned this figure claimed to have the “finest Turkish tobacco”.
