Could a tray be more than just a tray? In this case, yes. In the late 19th century paint decorated trays were highly fashionable. In America, artist would often decorate the tray with scenes. The examples that make me week in the knees often feature beautiful landscapes. This tray with the large assortment of fruit is set against a beautiful landscape that include a mill, and other buildings by a river. The folk are aspect of this painting is truly lovely.
