This lovely tureen is painted with a tulip on one side and a purple headed garlic flower on the opposite side, rendered with remarkable precision that helps identify it as by the hand of the noted porcelain painter Thomas Pardoe. A fitted lid is also painted with flowers and has a C scroll finial and similar handles. A hallmark of his work was his identification of each species he illustrated in red script on the reverse. That is the case with this piece, where “Tulip” and “Purple Headed Garlick” are noted on the reverse in flowing script. Born in Derby and there apprenticed at the Derby porcelain factory in the 1780s, Pardoe later began painting creamware at Swansea, where he came under the influence of the potter and botanist Lewis Weston Dillwyn and worked with William Weston Young. The tureen and covered lid, measuring7 1/4” L x 4” W x 5” H, have silver lustre edging and silver lustre handles and finial. aThis piece displays both Pardoe’s accumulated knowledge of botanical subjects and his extraordinary talents at illustration.
