Southern Inlay Writing Stand

Virginia, possibly Norfolk

Walnut, yellow pine, and poplar

Circa 1800-1815

H: 28.5″; W: 29″; D: 22″

This writing stand is a unique form that rarely turns up in a southern context.  This table with string inlay on the top, skirt, drawer, and legs is repeated throughout the piece, even on the backside.

The piece survives in wonderful overall condition with wear consummate with age and use.  The brasses are replaced and there is minor loss of inlay on the legs.

Why do we love it? This piece is a great combination of form and function.  It would work perfectly in the middle of a room or next to a sofa.  The proportions give it an elegant appearance that makes it look like a ballerina en pointe.
