“In the Line of Fire”

Signed: G. Morgan for Griffith Morgan (Wales c. 1819-after 1860)
Oil on canvas
Circa 1860
30” x 25”

This charming painting depicts a winter snowball fight on the streets of Brooklyn around 1860.  Inscribed on the sign of the building: HUSTED & CAR../CARPET/WARE… For HUSTED & CARLL, carpet store located at 296 Fulton in Brooklyn, New York.

Why we love it: Some paintings take you back to your childhood.  I remember my Dad working so hard to shovel the driveway and getting annoyed with me when I threw snowballs at his head.

Provenance: Kennedy Galleries, New York; Schwartz Galleries, Philadelphia.
Illustrated in Schwartz Galleries’ Philadelphia Collection LX, plate 18.
