Pair of China Trade Paintings

China
19th century
Oil on canvas

A pair of highly detailed paintings depicting life on the waterfront, presumably in Canton. The 18th and 19th centuries represent an unprecedented period of maritime commerce between China, Europe and America. From this trade, there survives a number of paintings of excellent quality without an attributable artist.

These two paintings reveal the way of life along the waterways in China, a popular domestic theme during the period.
