Third quarter, 18th century
Walnut, white pine
35″ W (case), 39.5″ (overall); 33″ H; 21.25″ D
When I picture a great original surface and excellent patina, this piece is the bell weather. The rich, untouched surface with gently oxidized brasses is perfection. The piece overall represents the finest eastern Massachusetts construction with blocked ends that gracefully flow into a dramatic serpentine front. The top extends 2 ½” inches past the case creating a desirable, dramatic overhang. The chest terminates in ball and claw feet that rest on early casters. This piece was in the personal collection of William Samaha, a well-respected dealer, and collector who handled some of the finest pieces in the late 20th century and was the personal dealer for Ned Johnson.
From the days of the earliest collectors, this form has been highly desirable with examples being handled by the finest dealers including Israel Sack, Ginsburg and Levy, and other 20th-century greats.
