Set of Four Wheeldon Salad Plates

English, likely Staffordshire

Third Quarter of the 18th Century

7 5/8″ Dia

Wheeldon ware or sometimes called Tortoiseshell ware is an earthenware, often creamware, that is decorated with a limited, rather dark, palette to imitate tortoiseshell,. The original technique was to sprinkle the unfired (or green) wares with powdered lead oxide and calcined flint with a trace of manganese oxide. This produced the colour effect within the glaze

This set of four salad plates are a striking example. The color and decorative molding of the plates make them a wonderful grouping to decorate with in any setting.
