Me n’ Belle

By Marlene Loznicka

North Carolina

20th century

Drawing on paper

22 1/2″ H x 17 1/2″ W

Loznicka splits her time between Morehead City, North Carolina, and Maine. This drawing likely done in N.C. depicts an old man napping with his loyal companion next to him. The dog is standing guard while the man is sitting on a bench with a cigarette lit in his mouth. Behind him, we see a Dr. Pepper and beer sign. Loznicka studied art in Italy and after taught at the North Carolina Museum of Art, North Carolina State University, and Guilford College. Loznicka’s works have been featured in numerous exhibitions and garnered several awards.

WHY WE LOVE IT: Although, this drawing is in pencil, you can easily imagine a hot summer day with a man gently napping with his best friend next to him.
