Pewter and wood inkwell. The pewter rim marked “Draper’s Patent Jan. 7th, 1851″ originally fitted with a glass well, now has a folky hand-carved base made in Hilton Head, South Carolina and dated “1862.” This was probably carved by a Union soldier after 12,000 Union troops attached Port Royal (Hilton Head) in 1861. It was an important base of operations for the Union blockade of Savannah and Charleston.

WHY WE LOVE IT: To put this inkwell in context is amazing. You have a union troop station on a hot sandy island in the middle of two very important southern Towns.
